Description:
I bought two awesome pieces in St. Augustine from auction where they were clearing the collection of the Dow Museum to make way for re-modeling.
These are so cool.
Besides having a great wood burned engraving, they seem to be from oak barrels.
I am listing the two pieces I have separately.
The piece for this listing has an engraving of a monk holding a glass of wine.
The back panel is probably more telling for collectors to confirm if the panel was used for a barrel.
The piece has eye hooks to hold wire to hang the panel.
Measures 15-1/8” in diameter; it's only about 1/2” deep.
Pieces from the museum dated from early 1700's to early 20
th
century. My guess as a collector is at least not much older than 1850.
Condition
:
This piece has a bit of warping of the oak that you can see when it is laid flat. It difference does seem at all evident when hanging.
I did put lemon polish on the wood as it was quite dry.
On this piece, I replaced the copper wiring for the hanging as it was completely rotted.
Obviously, there are signs of age.
