Vintage 1960 Mattel CHATTY CATHY Blonde Girl 20" Doll DOES NOT Talk

$ 11.61

Availability: 100 in stock
  • Doll Gender: Girl Doll
  • Condition: I am the original owner of this doll. She was my Christmas gift in 1960. She is missing some hair because I would brush her hair the way my mother brushed mine. The difference was that Cathy hadn't been out in the Oklahoma wind. I played with this doll a LOT. I didn't play with her as much after Barbie came on the scene in 1963. Cathy no longer talks. I believe her voice box was replaced in 1961. These are the original clothes (not the panties). I have always stored this doll in my bedroom closet, never the attic or basement.

    Description

    My Chatty Cathy doll needs a new home. I received her as a gift in 1960. When I pull her string to talk, she doesn't . . . most of the time.  I did make out, "Please carry me." I believe my mother took this doll to a doll hospital in 1961 to replace her voice box. Her back is stamped: Chatty Cathy TM, Patents Pending Copyright MCMLX (1960), by Mattel INC. Hawthorn, Calif.
    I have never stored her in an attic or basement, so this is the best she can look. When I was five years old, I was guilty of brushing her hair as though she had been out in a windstorm.  That's why she is missing some. I would ask my mother to curl Cathy's hair.  She would say, "We will try, but it's like trying to curl straw."  These are her original clothes (not the panties). The eyelet top is missing a snap.  I am surprised that I still have the blue velvet shoes.  I remember how they would fall off.
    I have read that the Chatty Cathy doll was the first doll to actually look like a little girl. I remember my grandmother said, "She isn't a pretty doll." Oh, well. I showed this doll to some little girls recently.  They said, "That doll looks creepy!" There are no bite marks on this doll. She just looks old.
    I have a large flat rate box to mail by USPS from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I will use plenty of bubble wrap.
